Ratanakkiri Church received ten Tompoun ethnic minority youths so that they can continue their studies at the junior high school and high school levels in the provincial town. The Church also offered them a dormitory which included food and some pocket-money for each month of their study.
Sr. Nheb Sokny , the person in charge of the dormitory, said that the Church had initiated the programme to help society, uphold human dignity and be witnesses of God’s good news. She further said that the majority of the youths who received the assistance of the Church had come from poor families and lived in remote areas.
She added that the students’ families were required to pay 5,000 riel ($ 12.5) and 20kg of rice as contributions to their daily needs. The centre has a duty to pay their fees, food, tuition and the use of the dormitory.
She continued by saying that besides the centres in Ratanakkiri and Stung Treng provinces, she and Fr. Ivan Campana , had taken charge of another centre at which there are ten students staying. The Catholic Church-run youth centre in Banlung is located in Balung commune’s Phum 2, Ratanakkiri province’s Banlung district.
